In R.I.
Saturday, December 17th, 2005It got a little chilly here in Rhode Island, this odd and beautiful place where I grew up. I managed to spend a few days admiring the coastal parts of my home state. Newport and the rest of the island; neighboring Jamestown; Little Compton and Tiverton Four Corners. The 18-degree weather that greeted me was a brusque welcome, a kind of cold that nibbles into the flesh. The wind blowing across Thames Street gives one a feeling that their face is being waxed. So it was earlier this week, before we climbed back into 40-degree weather.
Even in the presence of the cold, it feels like home.
